Corona test concept for events

Finally back to culture, finally back to sport, finally back to events, finally back to public life and participating in it! That is what many of us wish for. Chemnitz residents can now actually hope. Because in Chemnitz, despite Corona, event test runs are being carried out using new apps. So far, almost all companies and event organisers have agreed to participate in these test runs. The C³ Chemnitzer Veranstaltungszentren GmbH has already carried out the first events with well thought-out hygiene concepts and the new apps. In this article you can read how that worked out, which app we favour, and whether we will soon be able to enjoy art and culture live again.

Events despite Corona - a trial run

The desire for live events is not only strong on the side of the audience. Artists and people working in the event industry are also eagerly awaiting the opening of public life. However, the danger posed by Corona is still very present. Although more and more people are now being vaccinated, that is still not a free ticket for a convivial evening at a concert. But Chemnitz cultural workers, event organisers and restaurant and bar owners have now agreed to take part in a pilot project. With the help of special apps, similar to luca, they are rehearsing a few test runs.

Apps from Saxony

The events organised by C³ Chemnitzer Veranstaltungszentren GmbH could be realised through the apps BE.SAFE and THEED. Both apps are based on a similar mode of operation. Antigen rapid tests can be used to determine whether a tested person is infectious or not. A negative result offers a time window of 24 hours in which events can be attended. The use of the apps is free of charge for private individuals. You download it, enter your personal data in the customer account and then receive a ticket as a QR code on your mobile phone or as an e-mail. This confirms that you are not infectious and are allowed to stay in so-called Green Zones.

Green Zones are protected zones where only people who have tested negative are allowed to enter. The owners of the locations scan the QR code and are thus always certain who is with you and when. The personal data is only stored for as long as is necessary for the service and is of course treated with the utmost sensitivity. The data is only required for billing the tests to the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians.

Even people who do not have a smartphone can get tickets for Green Zones. The test result is simply handed out in printed form here.

Do the apps really work? - We tested it at two events

The test runs took place at the city council meeting in the C3 Carlowitz Congress Centre Chemnitz and at a basketball game of the Niners Chemnitz in the exhibition hall. No more than 80 guests were present at either event.

At the city council meeting, participants had to show their QR code, which was sent to them in advance by email, to receive a test. This was then administered by trained staff. After the test, the guests went to a waiting area until they received their test result by mail. After that, they could verify themselves with this result and attend the event. Each time they re-entered the Carlowitz Hall, guests had to show their negative result.

"The result of this test run was unanimous: It was a complete success. Everything worked smoothly and the online processing went without a hitch."

Grit Schiefelbein

However, if more guests attend an event or do not own a smartphone, it is no longer possible to test on site because there would not be enough capacity. That is why there are now many test centres in various cities that offer exactly this kind of testing for the apps before an event. There, one then has the possibility to receive the QR codes or printouts in case of a negative test. By the way, the tests are free of charge and can be carried out at the Chemnitz stadium, for example.

There were about 80 people at the Niners Chemnitz game in the exhibition hall. Here there were already separate queues for those who had already been to a test centre and for those who were tested on site. In this case, too, the test run was a complete success. Of course, there is a difference between 80 people cheering and 5,000, but it is a huge leap back to some kind of normality.

Outlook

With the launch of BE.SAFE and THEED, the developers from Saxony have really made a great contribution to opening up public life. The test runs show the great potential. But one must not forget that regulations can also change again quickly. However, in order to be prepared, we, the C3 Chemnitz Event Centres, have worked out a hygiene concept, following the current resolutions, to ensure the greatest possible protection for our guests. We are also working more and more intensively on tamper-proof, digital tools to ensure that the risk of infection can be virtually eliminated.

"BE.SAFE and THEED are really very good apps that will play an immense part in making events safe again soon. We hope that with the help of such quick tests we will be able to welcome more visitors to our events in the future and share great experiences again!"
